Coach Tyler Knight

Tyler was born and raised in Rose Hill, KS where he attended high school. He was a member of both the football and track teams all four years, setting multiple records. With the help and training he received in Kansas City at Xtreme Athletics, he jumped 15’0 and is the current record holder at Rose Hill High.

After high school, he moved on to Butler Community College, where a lack of resources led to a less than satisfying year for him. After a year and a half of competing unattached while attending Kansas State University, Tyler made the transfer to Wichita State. With Pat Wilson as his coach and more knowledge/equipment than he had ever had before he took flight. One year after transferring he set a new personal best of 5.05m (16’6.75″) followed one year later by a jump of 5.20 (17’0.75″), placing him #6 on Wichita State Indoor All-time top 10 list.

Currently, Tyler owns a business (The Nutrition Vault) near Andover, KS and has been coaching for WVA since 2018. He has helped coach a multitude of state medalists/champs, school record holders, and assisted in the recruitment of several athletes to continue their pole vault career at the collegiate level.

Coach Jessie Johnson

My name is Jessie Johnson and I’m from what once was a small town called Acyridge, TX, in the DFW area. Because my dad was a HS Strength and Conditioning coach, I grew up tagging along to his weight room. That’s where my love for fitness, olympic lifting, and soccer first began. I grew up doing all sorts of sports, such as basketball, soccer, volleyball, and track & field. In the end, track & field, more specifically pole vaulting is what really stuck. I was blessed enough to receive a full ride pole vault scholarship to Auburn University in Auburn, AL. I spent five years getting my Bachelors and Masters degree in Exercise Science and competing in the SEC as a student-athlete.

After graduation I continued to pursue my dream of going to the Olympic trials, until a shoulder injury forced me to change my plans. I now dedicate my time to coaching and hope to resume my training once my injury has healed. For now, the goal is to remain as healthy and active as I can while passing on the knowledge I gained from a mixture of different coaches/coaching styles over the years.
